Edna Mae Harris
Edna Harris, a longtime Rockaway resident, died October 12.
Harris, a family assistant, was born in Burlington, North Carolina. At the age of 61, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the College of New Rochelle. Harris worked in several local schools including PS 105, 104, 198, 253 and 215. She was also a member of the NAACP, PTA, Rockaway Civic Association and her favorite, VFW. According to family, she loved to sing and was dubbed "songbird."
She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Gladys Ector; husband, James Thomas; and brother, John Jr.
Harris is survived by her brother, Willie Ector; children, Patricia, John, Virginia, Travis, Angela, Sharon, Victor, Sean and Rodney; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; daughters in-law, Mary "Bunnie" and Crystal; one goddaughter and many other family members and friends.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home. A service was held at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Interment was at Greenfield Cemetery in Hempstead, New York.
