Good-Bye To A Dear Friend
My dear friend, George Bryant, passed away on August 30 of this year. He was a mighty special friend to me. As of a few years ago, when we all gathered together with our landlord Matthew Safos, to my amazement Matthew exclaimed in a shrill voice, "If it weren't for this man, you wouldn't be living in this house!" This is a bold statement to have made; yet it was true.
Before I moved to my landlord's house, which is located on Beach 113 Street, he didn't like the fact that I had 4 cats at that time. Matthew claimed and complained that the people who lived before me in the same apartment I was to occupy were vile and filthy, and that was why they eventually had to move out of there. Poor George talked till he was blue in the face, reassuring Matthew that I was nothing like those people he passionately got to dislike.
My friend George just kept putting in good words for me. He spoke with Matthew trying to convince him that he used to live right beside me in the same house on Beach 121 Street. While living there he never remembered seeing a dirty litter box in my apartment that he could recall.
All of George's great effort paid off because Matthew at long last let himself be swayed into believing that perhaps George was right. But my landlord was still a bit distrustful when he tested me after I already moved into one of his apartments. He did this by knocking at my door and as he came into my apartment, he immediately searched for the litter box and to his satisfaction found it to be clean.
Well, all I can say after this experience is that I was rather fortunate to have such a beautiful friend who wouldn't accept no as an answer from my landlord, while just stubbornly trying to insist that even though he was a landlord, he could be wrong. Matthew in the end gave way with open arms to George — and became open minded.
It is with great sadness in my heart that I must now live with the fact that my friend will no longer be with me. He has parted from this world, having a cardiac arrest and he did in a nursing home, namely, Resort Nursing Home.
Another endearing quality George has was that he never forgot to call me on my birthday and personally wish me a happy birthday, which happens to be on September 7.
