Remembering Mae Hegarty

Dear Editor,

When I read the obituary of Mae Hegarty in the September 26 edition The Wave, I recalled my telephone conversation with her before my husband, Jim, and I left Rockaway for Florida in early September. I told Mae how much I loved her and what a wonderful role-model she was to women of all ages in the Rockaway community.

I reminded Mae that The Hegarty Van Line transported the contents of the Tully family home from Astoria to Dayton Towers West in the late 1960s. My mom and dad held the Hegarty name in high esteem.

I thanked Mae for sharing her singing and dancing talents with the Columbiettes, senior citizens clubs, Belle Harbor Yacht Club, etc. As a community activist, Mae was always present to express her views at the Regular Democratic Club.

Mae, I know that you are singing Bill Bailey and dancing in heaven with your loved ones. Thanks for the happy memories. Mae Hegarty will be missed but never forgotten!
