Peninsula Hospital Center Honors 'Gert' Oltchick

Peninsula Hospital Center, an affiliate of the North Shore - LIJ Health System, is pleased to include Gertrude "Gert" Oltchick as one of its esteemed 2008 honorees. Oltchick first came to the Rockaways from Brooklyn during the 1940s to spend time at her parents' summer home. In 1951, her family moved across the street into the year-round home where she still resides.

Until a few years ago, she commuted daily to Long Island City to assist with the administration of the family business, Thypin Steel Company, Inc., where she began to work at the age of 16. During her professional years, Oltchick was honored by the UJA, Professional Women in Construction and the Steel Service Center Institute. A few years after the sale of Thypin Steel, she retired and turned her attention to charitable activities.

Notably she has become involved in the Thypin Oltchick

Institute for Women's Entrepreneurship, a program sponsored by FEGS (Federation Employment and Guidance Service), developed by the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, where she plays an active role mentoring women interested in starting their own businesses. Oltchick devotes time to the Peninsula Hospital Center where she has served as a volunteer as well as an actively involved and productive member of the Auxiliary. She was honored by the

Greater New York Hospital Association at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan for her fundraising skills and dedication to the Hospital Center. In the course of her passion and dedication, she shares her wisdom and encourages her children Stuart, Arlene and Ellen, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
