PHC Hosts 'Reunion' For Stroke Survivors
On Thursday, September 25, 2008, Peninsula Hospital Center, the region's NYS Department of Health designated Stroke Center and affiliate of the North Shore/LIJ Health System, and Peninsula Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation hosted a "reunion" Stroke Support Group. The event was very well attended by former Traumatic Brain Injury Unit patients, stroke survivors, their families and their caregivers.
Director of External Affairs for the Hospital Center, Liz Sulik, provided the special recognitions and introductions of Robert V. Levine, president and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Eric Lippman, director, Rehabilitation, Dr. Jeffrey Kornreich, attending physician, Rabbi Bennett Rackman and nurse manager, Janet McGowan. The most inspirational speakers at this special luncheon were Joy Dumnoi and Theresa Morris both of whom spoke from their hearts about their stroke recovery experiences. Everyone who was present experienced a very warm "welcome back" and many recognized other stroke survivors - it was truly a gathering of old friends who renewed their relationships. A special lunch was provided by Jim Brennan of Flatbush Surgical Supply.
After the presentations and guest speakers, the attendees split into two groups; one for stroke survivors and the other for caregivers and family members. In these smaller groups, many shared their own personal experiences and found strength in the knowledge that they are not alone in their journey to recovery.
Another special meeting is planned for Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 9 a.m. in the dining room of the Traumatic Brain Injury/Acute Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at the Hospital Center. Dr. David Steiner, director of the TBI Unit, will be the guest speaker. Everyone who is a stroke survivor, along with his or her caregivers and friends, is invited to attend.
