St. John's Episcopal Hospital Honors 'Employees Of The Month'

St. John's Episcopal Hospital named Erica Ashford, physical therapist, the Employee of the Month of July.
St. John's Episcopal Hospital recently honored its Employees of the Months of July, August and September. At St. John's patients - and coworkers - are encouraged to nominate staff members who provide excellent care. Each winner receives a Tiffany crystal staff and $100. The qualities of the Employees of the Month are related to the Hospital's core values of responsibility, respect, professionalism, teamwork and compassion.

July's winner is Erica Ashford, Physical Therapist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Ashford has been employed at St. John's since 1981. She was nominated by two nursing co-workers, who consider her part of their unit's team. Ashford embraces all of St. John's "core values" in the performance of her job duties—responsibility, compassion, respect and professionalism. She has exhibited her willingness to lend a hand even if the patient involved is not on her rehab schedule. She always listens to the concerns of her patients, attempting to quell their fears and apprehensions. Her co-workers cite her for her enormous strength and ability to encourage even the most resistant patient to get out of bed and walk. Ashford is also praised for her teamwork, as she consistently collaborates with the nursing team to provide comfort measures to those in her care.

Esther Appiah, RN, who works on the Telemetry Unit, was the Employee of the Month of August.
August's winner is Esther Appiah, RN, Cardiac Telemetry Unit. Employed at St. John's since 2005, Appiah was nominated by a patient, who cited her for her professionalism and compassion, and stated that Appiah's level of care was a major factor in his recovery. Her Nurse Manager states that Appiah is a team player, works well with all of her colleagues, and is always flexible with the floor schedule in the event of a staffing crisis. She is clearly a fine example of teamwork. Appiah consistently displays compassion and respect towards her patients, and is considered an asset to her unit by all who know her.

Cynthia Criss, DO, attending physician in the Department of Pediatrics at St. John's Episcopal Hospital was named, as Employee of the Month for September.
September's winner is Cynthia Criss, MD, Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Criss has been employed at St.John's since completion of her residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2000. She was nominated by a patient who stated that he was extremely impressed with the care and concern that she showed for her patients. This patient also reported that Dr. Criss always made sure that all questions and concerns were fully addressed and answered. Dr. Allan Steinberg, Chairman of Pediatrics, says that Dr. Criss, who is in charge of the Pediatric practice in the Ambulatory Care Center, is highly dedicated to the Hospital and its patients. She is well-liked and respected by everyone. She is a fine example of the core values of compassion, respect and professionalism.
