Sanders Fights To Ease Elevator Breakdowns
In response to a Daily News report on numerous failed elevators in public housing, Councilman James Sanders Jr. recently met with the New York City Housing Authority and local tenant association leaders.
In Queens, the Ocean Bay Apartments, Beach 41 Street Houses, and Redfern Houses were ranked as having the worst elevators in the borough.
The alarming reports prompted Sanders to call on NYCHA to address the concerns of residents in these developments. Beach 41 Street Houses Tenant Association President Lizzie Brown told the Daily News, "I live on the fourth floor, and I don't take the elevator anymore.
I'm afraid of them."
Councilman Sanders, NYCHA and tenant leaders discussed ways to work together to help address the crisis on the peninsula, especially when it comes to vandalism.
"We must no longer turn a blind eye when we see our neighbors destroying the very places we live," said Sanders. "I'm calling on the NYCHA to inspect our elevators on a more frequent basis to ensure our seniors and handicapped no longer have to endure climbing mountains to get to their apartments."
