Selma Kaplan, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died October 5.
Kaplan, President of Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park, was a leading figure in philanthropy and a longstanding member of Peninsula Hospital Center. She served on the Credentials, Development, Nominating and Quality Assurance committees and as a Medical Board representative. She had been an Officer of the PHC Board since 1993 and had served on the Board for Peninsula Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation. She was the first woman to be elected to the position of president of Temple Beth-El. She also served as the Executive Director, Fundraising Chairperson and several terms as its Sisterhood President. She was a lifetime member of the National Council of Jewish Women, the Philip Port Cancer Society, the Rockaway Park Chapter of Hadassah and the Peninsula Hospital Center Auxiliary.
She is survived by her children, Allen (Lissy) and Rachel (Howard); grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at the Temple Beth-El. All other arrangements were kept private.
