From The Artists Studio
When: Saturday, October 16. Where: Gateway National Recreation Area, Building T149, Fort Tilden.
The Rockaway Artists Alliance kidsmART afterschool program will join with the Afterschool Alliance in this year's Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide series of rallies in support of afterschool programs, on October 16. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative, the federal government's principal funding stream for afterschool programs. To mark the occasion, and to urge full funding for afterschool, supporters will gather for Lights On Afterschool rallies in more than 7,500 communities. In all, one million Americans are expected to gather at events across the country to draw attention to the need for more afterschool programs.
The kidsmART afterschool program sponsored by the Department of Youth and Community Development will be hosting a Lights On Afterschool event at Building T149 in Fort Tilden from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2008. Special guests include the Silly Dilly Band, specializing in entertainment for children of all ages. The Silly Dilly Band is scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. They recently performed for RAA's ARTSPLASH and reviews from area children and their parents were smashing. kidsmART currently serves hundreds of youth in the Rockaway community providing them a safe place to go after the school day ends. All registered kidsmART participants are invited to attend. kidsmART is offered free of charge to children in grades 1 through 7. kidsmART applications may be picked up on-site in Fort Tilden. For further information about the event, please contact the RAA at 718-474-0861. For more information about Lights On Afterschool or about afterschool programs in general, visit www.afterschoolalliance. org.
Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning. According to data from the Afterschool Alliance, 14.3 million children are without adult supervision in the afternoon hours.
Next RAA general meeting is Monday, October 13, starting at 7:30 p.m., in sTudio 7 Gallery, RoCA. Featured is a Halloween slide show, put together by Apryl Green, composed of approximately 200 images taken by Jonas Mlenak of last year's 'piradically' successful RAA interactive Halloween production starring the ghoulish Prison Ship. All are invited to RAA general meetings, to show your own artwork and/or admire and learn from that of others.
And by the way, RAA is looking for Halloween volunteers. We need actors, actresses, costume makers, set designers and more. Meetings are in sTudio 7 in Fort Tilden every Friday until Halloween. Call 718-474-0861.
