Broad Channel Bits

Last year's BCAC swim team Last year's BCAC swim team Cooler temperatures find many people sleep more comfortably at night in cool, comfortable fall than they did in summer. Bowing to the season, winds blow dried leaves around yards, streets and sidewalks and sometimes into the living room!

The Book Discussion Group will meet in the B.C. library to discuss Art of Mending by Elizabeth Berg on Saturday, October 11 at 11 a.m.

On Sunday, October 12 in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., take a walk through the refuge and see what it offers in autumn. Led by a ranger, the stroll will be in the South Garden and onto the West Pond Trail. Bring binoculars. Sign up in advance at 718-318-4340.

The 2nd Annual BCAC Memorial Golf Outing in memory of Chris Keegan will be held on Tuesday, October 14 at Forest Park Golf Course. Check in at 9 a.m.; tee off at 10 a.m. A shotgun start will be based on 100 golfers. Cost is $150 per golfer; dinner only at the North Channel Yacht Club costs $35 per individual. Price includes the following: a round of golf with cart; breakfast at the Golf Course; lunch at the turn; soda, beer, water on the course during the round; golf goodie bag and shirt, and the Awards Dinner after the round of golf. Awards will be presented for: First, Second, Third Place Teams; Closest to the Pin; Longest Drive and Best Dressed Golfer. Prizes and Raffles will be at the dinner. Family Portrait Night at PS 47 will be held on Friday, October 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Sitting fee is $10; portraits can be chosen online and ordered directly. Call Gerri Trudden to make an appointment at 718-474-3138 or Mikegerri1125 @aol.com.

A two-session Defensive Driving Course will be given on Wednesday, October 15 and Thursday, October 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the School Building at 16 Noel Road in Broad Channel, in the lunchroom. By taking this course, you can receive 10 percent off your car insurance for 3 years or up to 4 points off your license. No test will be given. Fee is $60. All proceeds benefit St. Virgilius religious education program.

The BCAC CYO Girls Swim team will be holding registration on Saturday, October 18 and Saturday, October 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the BCAC field. For any questions, call Nancy 718-945-1329 or Barbara 718- 474-0139.

A Sunday Brunch will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church Hall on October 19 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is a choice of scrambled eggs or pancakes with sausage or bacon; hash brown potatoes will be served with both choices. Coffee, tea, juice and cake will be served also. Donation: $6. A 50/50 drawing will be held; tickets are $10 each. On Sunday, October 19 in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. children age 4 and older, accompanied by a parent, will create a piece of autumn and then go on a ranger-led, brief nature walk. Sign up in advance at 718-318-4340.

A Halloween Costume Party will be held at the VFW Hall on Shad Creek Road on Saturday, October 25, starting at 8 p.m. Donation will be $20 for a single person and $35 per couple. The donation will include Food, Soda, Beer, Wine, and Desert. There will be a D.J. and Cash Prizes for Best, Original, and Scariest Costumes. Proceeds will go to the Veterans at St. Albans Hospital for cookies, lap blankets, and cash gifts for Christmas.

The Broad Channel Pre-K Children's Halloween Party will be on Sunday, October 26 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church. Party is for children, ages 3 to 8; cost of $5 per child includes crafts, games, contests, cupcakes and goody bags. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All proceeds to benefit the Broad Channel Pre- K.

St. Virgilius Golden Age will be going on a bus trip to the Trump Casino in Atlantic City on Tuesday, October 28. The bus will leave from Crossbay Boulevard and Noel Road at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $35 per person with cash return of $25 and $5 for food.
