FR Youth Court Forced To Close

Dear Editor,

Despite our best efforts and the assistance provided by many in the community to secure funding, we are currently facing an insurmountable budgetary shortfall at the Far Rockaway Youth Court. As a result, we will be closing operations on September 20. We greatly value the program and deeply regret this unavoidable decision. We appreciate the expressions of support we have received from so many people in recent weeks.

We are proud of the Youth Court members who have religiously attended the program and served the community through their hard work. They have participated in community service projects and continue to be concerned with the issues that affect their community. They have become great leaders and we wish them the best in all their future endeavors.

In more than one year of operating, the Far Rockaway Youth Court heard 72 cases and maintained a compliance rate of nearly 85 percent, hearing cases ranging from disorderly conduct to truancy.

We would like to thank the residents, community partners, youth court members, schools, 100 and 101 Precincts, community leaders, elected officials and the families of Far Rockaway who helped the Youth Court achieve so much in such a brief period of time. I hope our paths will cross again in the future.
