NYPD Transit District 23 To Host Blood Drive
      The New York Police Department Transit District 23 will hold a blood drive on Monday, October 13 in the Waldbaum's parking lot between 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Those interested in donating blood must be between 16 and 76-years-of-age; have valid identification and know social security number; and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. 'American Princess' Blows Engine, Out Of Service To Be Replaced By Yellow Water Taxi
      The "American Princess," the boat that has been used since May to bring commuters from Rockaway to Manhattan's Pier 11, suffered a blown engine on Wednesday and had to be towed to dry dock, officials say. Commuters arriving at Riis Landing for the second run of the morning at 7:45 on Wednesday were turned back and told to find another way to get to work and school.

Center For Wound Healing Hosts Open House
      The Center for Wound Healing at St. John's Episcopal Hospital held an open house of Wednesday, September 17. The center provides a wide range of treatment options including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for the most difficult wound conditions. HBOT is a medical treatment enhancing the body's natural healing and strengthening the immune system.

Corral A Commercial In Rockaway
     Friday morning was commercial day in Rockaway as film crews shot at a few locations in Rockaway on Friday morning, September 27. Pictured, the film crew settles outside of the Belle Harbor Steak House on Beach 116 Street. The crew later moved to the Snug Harbor on Beach 108 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The commercial, which will be seen on television early next year was for a chain of buffet restaurants called the "Golden Corral." Reportedly, the restaurant chain will soon be opening in New York City.

DEP Tests Jamaica Bay Sewage Pump Station
     The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), with major advocacy from the Jamaica Bay Eco-Watchers group, is hoping to make Jamaica Bay a "no discharge zone" in the near future. In order to do so, DEP will place three waste dumping stations around Jamaica Bay by next spring to encourage people to not dump waste into the delicate waters of Jamaica Bay, but rather pump it from their boats. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cannot mandate an area a "no discharge zone" without having this and other proper alternatives available to boaters. Workers and DEP officials are pictured testing the system this week near Beach 100 Street.

NCJW Donates To SJEH Nursery
      The Peninsula branch of the National Council of Jewish Women, located in Lawrence, donated a number of gift bags to the nursery at St. John's Episcopal Hospital on Thursday, September 25. The gift bags, marked for boys and girls, contained clothing and donated toys. Many of the clothing items were hand-knitted by volunteers.

Rotary Clubs Sponsor Beach To Beach Bike Ride
      Bike riders of all ages participated in the Beach to Beach Bike Ride on Saturday, September 27. Locals rode bicycles to raise money to eradicate polio. The ride began on Cross Bay Boulevard, continued over the Cross Bay Bridge and ended in Rockaway Beach. Following the ride, a concert featuring The Solid State Band and a BBQ were held at The Irish Circle.

RWA Holds Fundraiser At Riis Park
      By Miriam Rosenberg The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) held their first fundraiser last weekend with a reception and screening of the film, "City of Water," at the Riis Park Bathhouse. The film documents the history of New York City's waterways and presents different ideas to increase the use of the waterfront in the future.

      Gerald Sullivan, Rockaway and South Queens reform candidate for State Assembly, recently joined EMS at the Knights of Columbus Hall to honor EMS President Patrick Bahnken for his service to EMS, the FDNY and New York City. Also in attendance were the EMS Pipes and Drum Corps, led by Rockaway's own John J. Manning.

West End Temple Hosts 'Saturday Safe Haven'
     The West End Temple started its Saturday Safe Haven program for tweens last weekend at the synagogue building at 147-02 Newport Avenue in Neponsit. More than children from grades 3 to 8 attended the first safe haven program, which is run one Saturday night each month during the school year. Pictured, boys play ping-pong.
