Broad Channel's Annual Coastal Cleanup
     The Jamaica Bay Eco Watchers organized a cleanup team to participate in the American Littoral Society's annual coastal cleanup in Broad Channel. Shape Up Works Out For St. Jude
      Shape Up Ladies Fitness Center will raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 230 Beach 102 Street, in the Sands Point building, on Saturday, September 27 at 8 a.m. The funds raised will benefit the premier center for the research and treatment of childhood cancer and other deadly diseases.

Local Requests Boardwalk Repairs
      Local Resident Paul Schubert recently sent a letter to Department of Parks and Recreations' commissioner Adrian Benepe which briefed him on the condition of the boardwalk and requested that areas along the boardwalk that are in poor condition be blocked off until repaired.

Charles F. Heeran Foundation Communion Breakfast
      The Charles F. Heeran Foundation Communion Breakfast was held on September 13, at St. Francis de Sales Church. The annual celebration is held in memory of the many people, who were lost on the September 11, 2001. Father John Hajen, the former prior of the Augustinian Order was honored for his 50th Anniversary, Golden Jubilee, during the ceremony.

Saint John's Episcopal Hospital Holds Successful Ocean Walk
      St. John's Episcopal Hospital held its Third Annual Ocean Walk on Sunday, September 21. The most successful since its inception, the Walk raised more than $63,000 to support the renovation of the St. John's obstetrics service, which is the only program of its kind in the Rockaways. More than 60 people gathered, walked and enjoyed lunch.

Edgemere Suffers Weekend Verizon Outage
      Nearly 400 Verizon telephone customers in Edgemere lost service this past weekend, when a crane truck crashed into a telephone pole last Saturday night, according to a Verizon company spokesperson. Most customers' service was restored by Monday morning as Verizon crews worked around the clock to repair the damaged pole.
