Tot Falls Two Floors From B. 96 St.Window
A young child fell from the second floor window of a small Rockaway apartment house at about 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, sources say, sparking an argument over whether the boy, reportedly three years old, should be taken to the hospital by a city ambulance. Eyewitnesses told The Wave that the stillunidentified tot fell from the open window at 197 Beach 96 Street, just off Rockaway Beach Boulevard, which did not have the requisite window guard.
Police sources say that he was playing unattended in the bedroom when he fell.
According to several people who witnessed the aftermath of the fall, the boy's parents rushed from the house and picked up the child, apparently determined to take him back into the apartment as city ambulances, called by eyewitnesses, arrived at the scene.
An argument reportedly ensued, with responding police officers telling the parents that the child had to be taken to the hospital and the parents stating loudly
that they would take him to their private doctor. Police officers won the argument, and the child was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where, officials say, he was kept overnight for observation. Police say, however, that he suffered bruises to his head and his elbow and was conscious when he was taken to the hospital. Sources told The Wave on Tuesday that the fall had been reported to the city's Administration for Children's Services as a possible case of child abuse, but ACS would neither confirm nor deny that report. Shortly after the accident, reporters and onlookers on the scene noted a man placing window guards on the apartment window from which the child fell. Police say that no arrests have been made as a result of the fall and that the investigation by detectives from the 100 Precinct Squad is ongoing.
