FR Drug Counselor Charged In Rikers Drug Bust
The York City Department of Investigation (DOI) has announced the arrest and charging of a Far Rockaway man accused of attempting to smuggle drugs onto Rikers Island earlier this year. Juan Delarosa, 56, the Far Rockaway native and former substance abuse counselor, is being accused of trying to supply inmates with heroin and cocaine for potential sale within the jail, according to the DOI. Delarosa, although formally charged this week with first and second degree attempted promoting of prison contraband, was initially arrested on February 8, outside the jail where police found 109 packets of heroin and two bags of cocaine, according to the DOI.
Delarosa told authorities he was on his way to work when arrested at the jail's entrance at 19 Avenue and Hazen Street.
Delarosa, who faces up to four years in prison, was a drug counselor for Prison Health Services, an independent contractor that provides health services to inmates.
