Hammels Man Shot In Leg
An unidentified Hammels man, leaving home, reportedly for a court date, was shot once in the leg by a gunman who then fled west in an automobile, police said on Wednesday. The shooting was one of three "shots fired" calls in Rockaway this week.
Police sources told The Wave that the man was walking from 411 Beach 54 Street in the Hammels public housing complex at about 8:25 a.m. on September 10, when he was shot once in the leg from a short concrete porch that runs along a portion of the building.
Police responding to a call to the 911 system that a man was shot in front of the building called in a report of a man fleeing westbound on Beach Channel Drive in a blue Audi four-door automobile.
A 101 Precinct lieutenant responding to the confirmed shooting called for a Level I mobilization, which brought police officers from the Queens South Task Force as well as from aviation and canine units.
The precinct's shooting plan was put into effect, sending patrol cars to points along both Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Beach Boulevard searching for the possible shooter.
One such point was set up at Beach 59 Street and Beach Channel Drive, stopping cars and searching for a man fitting the description of the shooter.
The victim was transported to Jamaica Hospital where he was reportedly treated and released.
On Sunday, September 7, shots were fired near the intersection of Beach Channel Drive and Beach 86 Street. Police chased a young man into 85-02 Rockaway Beach Boulevard in the Hammel Houses, but neither the shooter nor his intended victim was found after a long search.
On Wednesday evening, September 10, at about 6 p.m. several shots were fired near the corner of Beach 54 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Police say that several people who heard the shots and scattered for cover called the 911 system but, once again, neither the shooter nor a victim was located.
