Auxilians Welcome PHC Residents
     The featured topic at this month's Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary meeting was, "A Day in the Life of a PHC Resident." Peter A. Guiney, DO, director of Medical Education and the Family Practice Residency Program, along with two of his residents entertained the membership with tales of their daily routine at the Hospital Center. Dr. Dipak Patel, chief resident, and Dr. Wayne Dodakian, second- year resident both spoke of their personal backgrounds, educational histories and the reasons that they were drawn to Peninsula Hospital Center to complete their Family Practice residencies. 'Cathedral Windows' To Be Raffled Off
     A handmade quilt, made by the Shore Garden Club, will be raffled off at the Rockaway Music and Arts Festival on September 13 and 14 at Jacob Riis Park. The monies earned from the raffle will benefit the local civic beautification the Pat Brackley Park, Tribute Park and projects such as a Junior Seedling Group. This marks the 11th year in the tradition of hand quilting for the Shore Garden Club members. The quilt called "Cathedral Windows," is made up of 50 different fabrics and measures 64" wide and 88" long. The quilting members are Joan Farrow, Marge McCarthy, Mary Meade, Nadia Murphy, Cecelia Punsal, Judy Rothman, Elaine Shun, Marilyn Walsh, Carinne Warnock and Sima Wolf.

Rockaway Park Hadassah Celebrates Dual Achievement
     The Rockaway Park Hadassah celebrated a dual achievement on June 24, during the Faye Cohen Heart Luncheon at the Lawrence Country Club. The group celebrated 60 years of Israel's independence and 60 years of the chapter's founding. Rabbi Blaine paid tribute to Israel's special anniversary and Selma Frank looked back on the chapter's history.

RWA Reception At Riis Park
      Rockaway Waterfront Alliance will host its end-ofsummer Benefit Celebration at Jacob Riis Park Bathhouse on Saturday, September 27 at 6:30 p.m. Ticket sales will support RWA Environmentor After-School Programs. There will be a free screening of the "City of Water" documentary at 7:30 p.m. The screening is being sponsored by HSBC and is free to the public.

Operation Give Back' Has Become A Family Affair For Rockaway
      It started with a family get-together four years ago and has developed into a program that emphasizes giving back to the community. Operation Give Back, which promotes education and health awareness, is an outgrowth of the annual Family Day that has taken place the last four years at O'Donohue Park in Far Rockaway.

'Pinwheels For Peace' Set For September 19, 20
      The Rockaway Museum is gearing up for the "Pinwheels For Peace" project at three Rockaway libraries in observance of United Nations' International Peace Day on September 21. The free workshops, open to children and adults, are aimed at encouraging artistic expression about the meaning of peace.

Radio Shack Returns To Rockaway Beach
     Radio Shack will be returning to the Dayton Plaza Shopping Center in Rockaway Beach. The store is nearly finished with construction workers beginning to install the new business signage. The store will be located next to the supermarket on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 90 Street. It is still undetermined what the store's hours will be and if employment opportunity details have been released. Radio Shack, which first opened its doors in 1921, operates more than 6,000 stores nationwide and is considered one of the major consumer electronics retailers in the country.

RMAC To Host 24th Fall Festival
      Every year the Rockaway Music and Arts Council's Fall Festival draws thousands of visitors, artists and craftspeople to Jacob Riis Park. This year, the RMAC will host its 24th Annual Fall Festival on Saturday, September 13 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
