Families and friends celebrate the unofficial last day of summer with barbeques and picnics at O'Donohue Park. Area residents take advantage of a perfect day to make use of the promenade at Beach 17 Street. As the final whistle of 2008 blew at 6 p.m. on Labor Day to call in swimmers, beachgoers applauded lifeguards in appreciation of a job well done this season. While lifeguards leave the beach for the final time in 2008, beachgoers stayed to enjoy themselves before heading back to work and school on Tuesday. Whether it was for swimming, relaxing or a sailboat ride, Monday was a beautiful day for activities on Far Rockaway's shores.
