School's Open - Drive Carefully'
MTA Bridges and Tunnels is once again participating in the American Automobile Association's (AAA's) annual public awareness campaign, "School's Open - Drive Carefully," with a message display at toll plazas at its seven bridges and two tunnels that advises motorists to be extra careful.
As the new school year begins throughout New York City's five boroughs, this year's poster will be on view through the end of September. The agency's facilities will also feature the "School's Open - Drive Carefully" directive on variable message signs during school-day hours. Since AAA began "School's Open - Drive Carefully" in 1946, the program has successfully contributed to lowering school-related pedestrian fatalities and reducing the number of traffic crashes involving school-age pedestrians and school bus riders. To help protect children, AAA urges motorists to slow down near schools and in residential areas; drive with headlights on, even during the day, so children and other drivers can see you; look for clues such as AAA School Safety Patrollers, bicycles and playgrounds that indicate children could be in the area; scan between parked cars and other objects for signs of children; practice extra caution in bad weather; and always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading students.
