The Bomb Squad and the NYPD Emergency Service Unit responded to a call near the fire station at Beach 49 Street last Friday after a suspicious black suitcase was reported on the corner of Beach 49 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Police closed off Beach 48 to Beach 50 Street while authorities evaluated the situation and found the suitcase to be empty and threat free. More ... A Rockaway Beach teenager allegedly ran off with a man's cell phone in Edgemere after asking the victim if he could use it to call his mother, according to police. The victim, Alan Martinez, 24, was approached by Dennis Watson, 17, of 8200 Shore Front Parkway, and asked if he could borrow the cell phone at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 35 Street, at 3:47p.m. More ... The Department of Parks and Recreation received eyewitness reports from fishermen on Monday afternoon citing that they had seen an eight to ten foot shark off the waters of Beach 9 Street. Department of Parks and Recreation, although not confirming the sighting did take precautions and closed the beach from Beach 9 Street to Beach 18 Street. Parks personnel found no signs of a shark in the water and reopened the beach, by following standard protocol, two hours later. More ... The City of New York's Department of Transportation issued a traffic alert for the week of Saturday, August 30 to Friday, September 5, providing the locations of road construction and events where lane and street closings will affect the flow of traffic. New York City's Department of Parks and Recreation has begun following through on promises to repair sections of Rockaway's famed boardwalk, The Wave was told recently.
