Following the planting of approximately 40 trees by the New York City Parks Department, various departments at St. John's Episcopal Hospital adopted a tree bed and planted flowers, donated by DeSetta Nurseries in Woodmere, in a competition for the best flower bed.

The hospital recently held an award ceremony and reception for the employees who tended the flower beds around the campus perimeter.

The flowers were judged by Daphne P. Hellmuth, a horticulture judge and resident of Lawrence. Assemblywoman Michele Titus was on hand to help give out the awards and she declared that "the community was the real winner" of the hospital's beautification effort.

The winning departments were: first place, Tower 11 Cardiac Care Center; second place to the Ambulatory Care Center; third place winner to the Cardiac Care Unit; and an honorable mention went to Employee Health Service. The Security Department was presented with a Best Sense of Humor Award.

All gardeners received certificates as well as African violets that were generously donated by Margaret Carpenter, vice president of Episcopal Health Service and president of St. John's Development Board.
