Weed And Seed Report

By Denean Ferguson, Weed And Seed Site Coordinator

The primary purpose of the Weed & Seed strategy is crime prevention and community revitalization. The aim to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity will be accomplished with dedicated effort from the local agencies and residents of the community.

On Saturdays, since starting July 12, several residents have been sacrificing their time and energy working with the NYPD's Juvenile Robbery Interdiction Program (JRIP) to provide a "Let's Rock the Hoops" for non-violence Basketball Tournament on Beach 82 Street.

These games have been about a lot more than just playing basketball. Before starting games, the youth have received workshops from NYPD's Detective Carl Robinson, lawyers from Queens Family Court, CUNY on Wheels, and HIV/AIDS education. James Kelley, of Which Way Youth, is a co-sponsor and Ocean Village resident. He says, "Our goal is to provide an alternative to street life, to provide positive and empowering activities to assist in developing leadership and interpersonal skills."

You are welcome to join us on Saturday, August 23 for the final championship game. Games begin at 10:00 a.m. Come celebrate the positive teamwork and efforts of over 60 youth!
