Responding To Voneskis' Letter

Dear Editor,

How dare you turn the recent drownings into a racist thing? The pain and sorrow the families of those who lost their lives in our ocean is bad enough to endure, but to turn this into "just another black kid" only shows how insensitive and uneducated you are about the situation.

The ocean does not have a conscience and does not choose who will lose their life. The waters this year have been especially rough with rip tides, strong currents and undertows. You would be aware of this if you actually went into the water at all.

The Rockaway community has been asking, petitioning and pleading with New York City and the Mayors (yes, not just the current Mayor!) to provide more lifeguards for years. Suggestions to add more guards, switch shifts to accommodate longer hours later in the day (which is when most of the drownings happen) or make the season longer into mid-September with lifeguards. Unfortunately this falls on deaf ears and empty pockets.

So please Al, this is not discrimination and racism-this has to do only with the almighty dollar!
