Sand Castle Contest Draws Creative Crowds
After a one-week delay, due to severe weather, the 13th annual Sand Castle Contest kicked off on the ocean on Beach 117 Street. Co-sponsored by West End Realty and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreations, the event drew dozens of participants in the four categories of competition and an equal number of spectators.
After two hours of creating, the proceedings were turned over to a distinguished panel of judges which included Linda and Danny Ruscillo, 100 Precinct Community Council; Mark Dana, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage; Marisa Miller and Laura Spies, NYC Park Rangers; Bert Sampson, Rockaway Today.com; Jill Weber, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation; Carolyn Brooks and Nick Dounias.
Trophies were awarded to winners in all categories. In the one to eight years old with adult(s) category, Matthew Taylor's "Skeet Ball" won first place; Angelina Ganz's "Mermaid" won second place; and Brian, Taime and Mireya Corcho's "Castle" took third place. In the 9 to13 years old with adult(s) category, the winners were Stephanie, Linhen, Lina and Henry Beltran's "Castle" won first place; Avianna Faugno's "Octopus" took second place. In the 9 to13 years old category, Claudia and Emily Dana and Meaghan Shevlin's "New Dragon on the Block" won first place; Breena Aggerup's "Turtles" took second place; and Feryal and Muvarak Moharam's "Castle" won third prize. In the adults, 14 years and up, category Kristine Supple and Ellen Nichtein's "Sandwoman" won first place; and James Johnson's "Homer Simpson" took second place.
