Moving Summer Into September
The ongoing debate about lifeguard coverage overlooks an important time of year, September. Come Labor Day Weekend, we will bid farewell to enjoying our delightful and refreshing ocean waters. Perhaps, the best swimming month of the year is forfeited for no apparent reason. The water is the warmest it will be all year and the sun's daytime intensity starts to subside.
Weekend coverage is a possibility to consider. Say Friday, Saturday and Sunday around the area's business beaches which likely are Beach 18 Street, Beach 60 Street, Beach 73 Street, Beach 90 Street, Beach 116 Street and part of Riis Park. This pattern of coverage or variant form would give city residents one last reprieve before fall fully arrives.
While it is true that many lifeguards go back to college and other fall responsibilities there are enough staff members staying that would likely welcome the additional hours. Everyone could safely enjoy some extra quality beach time.
Isn't it time that the Parks Department tries this approach?
