Wave readers who look forward to getting the newspaper each week will have an extra incentive with this issue.

Everyone who buys the paper on the newsstand this week will get a copy of the 2008 Newcomer's Guide, chockfull of everything Rockaway that you need to know.

Those who subscribe to the paper will get their Newcomer's Guide as a separate mailing.

In addition, the guide will be available free of charge at local banks, supermarkets and other commercial establishments.

The Newcomer's Guide is designed to provide those coming to the peninsula for the first time - as well as longtime residents - with information about such critical items as health care facilities, police and fire information, public, parochial and private school information and how to contact their public officials.

In addition, local history, arts organization and events, National Recreation Area happenings, local arts venues, events at the Gateway National Recreation Area, important local events throughout the year, information on community organizations and religious institutions are highlighted.

"This is truly a guide to everything Rockaway," said Wave Publisher Susan Locke. "The information in the book will be valuable not only for newcomers, but for those who already have sand in their shoes."
