Memorial Swim At 'Bell's Beach' Brings Crowd To B. 90 Street

The annual memorial swim to honor the memory of Firefighter Steven Belson, who was killed in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11,2001, was held last Saturday at "Bell's Beach," better known as Beach 90 Street. Belson was a lifeguard on that beach in his younger days and often surfed there. As part of the memorial, present day lifeguards were awarded scholarships by Madeline Belson, Steve's mother and by her grandson, Jack. Those who received the scholarships included Gina Cholakis (B. 73 St. shack), Nora Howard (B. 86 St. shack), James Johnson (B. 117 St. shack), Mary Anne Diehm (B. 106 St. shack), Devin Nuszer (Riis Park), Katlyn McFadden (135 St. shack), Gregory Baroutsos (B. 106 St. shack), Michelle Kenel (B. 135 St. shack), Sean Kittle (B. 73 St. shack), Molly Campbell (Breezy Point), Brianne Carroll (B. 73 St. shack), Joe Drennen (Breezy Point), John Weber (B. 149 St. shack), Maura O'Callaghan (Breezy Point) and Greg Pulkowsil (B. 73 St. shack).
