Joy and Fun Highlights Annual Graybeards Family Run

Rockaway seemed to have a bubble over it all week as thunderstorms raged all around, but there was no question that Friday would be a glorious night.

It was time for the Sixth Annual Graybeards Family Run presented by Arverne By The Sea. Rockaway Beach Boulevard was lined with spectators cheering on nearly 500 runners in the various races.

Once again the children's races drew the loudest applause. Rockaway's Special Olympians turned out in masse for an exciting and inspirational run. The Mile Race followed with Jonathan Maranga beating out a strong field, while Theresa Tolan was first female.

The 5K then saw two new champions hoist the trophy. Kevin Quinn took overall honors with a time of 18:57. Tricia Tubridy harkened back to her CHSAA Cross-Country days to take the female top prize in a time of 21:20.

Youth mostly ruled the day with Drew Winters coming up from North Carolina to take second and former classmate Brian Woods placed third. Rachel Gersh was third on the female side, where Carol Farrell saved face for the veteran runners by placing second.

In addition to the abundance of Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and drinks served up by the Graybeards, children's rides were added to the festivities this year. The Gray Riders once again provided the soundtrack for the evening. Check them out at upcoming appearances at Rockaway Lobster House, The Irish Circle, Tap & Grill, Jameson's and RAA Moonstage.

Raffle prizes were donated by Footlocker and our local merchants. The Graybeards Family Run wants to thank Brian McCabe, Joe Roberts, and the NYPD, Jill Weber, LeRoy Temple and Gerda of NYC Parks, Msgr. Brown and St. Francis de Sales. They would also like to thank our sponsors and donors, fellow Graybeards, all our other volunteers, race director Joe Featherston, and Graybeards chief of staff Mary Ellen Olsen. Thanks especially to all our runners and supporters. The 7th Annual Graybeards Family Run will be on Friday July 31, 2009. Mark your calendars now and remember to register early. See you next year.
