Beach 74 Street Turns One-Way Northbound

Routine DOT Decision Becomes Controversial

Beach 74 Street from Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Shore Front Parkway has become a one-way street northbound from Shore Front Parkway to Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

While the original plan was to have the traffic flow southbound, towards the beach, complaints by local residents that the street would replace the much wider Beach 73 Street as a thoroughfare, increasing the traffic flow on Beach 74 Street and negatively impacting the people who live near the street, the city changed its mind and decided to flow the traffic northbound, towards Rockaway Beach Boulevard instead.

That decision will maintain the pattern of one street southbound and the adjoining street northbound in that area.

That decision, however, sparked complaints to City Councilman Joseph Addabbo, Jr., that those who live in the Arverne By The Sea units between Beach 73 and Beach 74 Street now have to go out of their way to get to their driveways.

The transition from two-way to oneway traffic has allowed for new angleparking stalls on the west curb of Beach 74 Street, greatly increasing the parking available parking spaces for residents of the Arverne By The Sea development, as well as for those who come to the beach for the day during the summer months.
