The runners came in all sizes, shapes and ages as more than 500 local residents took part in the Graybeards Annual Family Run on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 129 Street last Friday, July 25. The races ranged from one block in length for kindergarteners to a three-K race for all ages and abilities, including many who walked the course. After the many running events, the Graybeards hosted a party in the St. Francis de Sales School playground. Pictured, young kids take to the road, assisted by their parents. Rockaway's favorite biker, Ed "Shevy" Shevlin, is riding to Newfoundland, Canada to once again raise money for the research and fight against cystic fibrosis. Last year Shevlin rode his Harley cross-country from Rockaway Beach, New York to Rockaway Beach, Oregon. He kept his own personal travel diary documenting his adventure and planned to do the same this year. More...
Councilman Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. recently toured the DEP treatment plant in Rockaway with members of Community Board 14. The tour consisted of a review of the sewage treatment process and issues that included that the odor emanates from the plant. Addabbo is scheduling a subsequent meeting with the DEP to discuss the pending upgrade of the treatment plant that was to be done in 2007, and odor control. The last upgrade was 1974. In 2004, $220 million was allocated for the plant, and in 2006-2007 $22 million was allocated for odor control. More...

One of Rockaway's most famous sports professionals, Nancy Lieberman of Bayswater, a standout at Far Rockaway High School and in the Woman's Professional Basketball League, has, at age 50, played more than a couple of minutes with the Detroit Shock of the WPBL, making her the oldest player to ever suit up for a league game. Kate Newman of Rockaway Point was awarded a scholarship by Roosevelt Field and Simon Youth Foundation (SYF), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational and career development opportunities to youth. Newman received one of eight SFY Awards of Excellence given nationally. The scholarship is renewable for up to for years. More...

Carl Aliviado Sr., a 32-year Rockaway resident, coming from Brooklyn, died July 24. Aliviado, a computer analyst, was born in Cebu City, Philippines. He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1961. More...
