Henry Monroe Childs Jr.
Henry Childs Jr., a former Rockaway pastor, died April 20.
Childs was born in Brooklyn on June 18, 1917. He graduated from Yale University and Yale Divinity School, and was ordained in 1944. He also attended the UCC's first General Synod. He served as Pastor at the First Congregational Church for 31 years. According to family, he loved people and nature. Hiking was another love of his; he climbed 46 mountains over 4,000 feet in the Adirondacks. One of his proudest accomplishments was hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine, over several years.
He is survived by his wife, Inga Kaisa Childs; children, Hal, John, Margaret and Elizabeth; daughtersin law, Joan and Kathleen; grandchildren, Cindy, Rebecca, Mary Ellen, Gregory and Steven; and great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jackson, Sophia, Eric and Elisa.
A memorial service was held at the Community Congregational Church in Benicia, California. A memorial service is scheduled for September 13, at the First Congregational Church.
