Teen Shot At Ocean Bay
An unidentified teenager was rushed to Jamaica Hospital on Tuesday night, suffering from a gunshot to her left shoulder, police say.
Sources told The Wave that the 16-year-old girl was standing with friends in front of 54- 30 Beach Channel Drive in the Ocean Bay Houses public housing complex at approximately 10 p.m. on July 22, when she heard a shot and felt something hit her arm.
She told police from the 101 Precinct that she did not see her assailant's face, but that he was wearing a white tee shirt and a hat.
A Level I Mobilization was called, bringing dozens of officers and specialized units to Rockaway to search for both the shooter and evidence.
Officers moved up and down the staircases of each of the buildings in what they term a "vertical patrol." NYPD helicopters searched the rooftops for the shooter.
A local police source said that a spent handgun round and several articles of clothing, including a red shirt and hat, along with a gold chain, were found near the shooting scene.
The teen was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where, officials say, she was treated and released.
The shooting incident was the second of the evening in Rockaway, police say.
About a half-hour before the Ocean Bay shooting, police officers from the 100 Precinct responded to a "shots fired" call at Beach 86 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, in front of the Hammel Houses complex.
Several callers reportedly contacted the 911 emergency system reporting multiple shots; at least eight, by one report.
Responding units, however, searched the general area, but could not find either a victim or an eyewitness.
