Rockaway's favorite biker, Ed "Shevy" Shevlin, is at it again. This time he is riding to Newfoundland to once again raise money for the research and fight against cystic fibrosis. Last year Shevlin rode his Harley cross-country from Rockaway Beach, New York to Rockaway Beach, Oregon and raised $16,000 along the way. More ... On Saturday, July 19, a police officer was assaulted by a teenage girl at Beach 116 Street after the officer asked the group she was with to leave the beach, officials say. Neither the girl nor the police officer was identified. On Sunday, July 20 a lifeguard was assaulted by a teen who refused his directions to leave the water. More ... On July 15, 1933 Lithuanian- American aviators Steven Darius and Stanley Girenas attempted the first non-stop flight from Floyd Bennett Field, New York to Kaunas, Lithuania. Darius and Girenas were the second aviators after Charles Lindbergh to make a non-stop flight of 6411 km across the Atlantic Ocean, recording the fourth fastest crossing in 37 hours and 12 minutes. The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge hosted an exciting event for children on July 20. The children participated in discussions, crafts and a nature walk. They learned about the characteristics of insects and shared their favorite bugs with the group. Children and adults gathered together to clean up Beach 25, 26, 27 and 28 Streets. After the cleanup, refreshments were served.
