Rockaway Walks To Rid Pounds And Violence
On Saturday, July 12, Councilman James Sanders Jr. kicked off the 2nd annual Rockaway Walks event on Beach 59 Street and the boardwalk. The program was created to educate the community on ways to eat healthy and shed pounds.
In addition, Sanders' district manager, Donovan Richards, stated that, "This summer we aren't only walking to shed pounds, but also for those who have lost their lives to senseless violence in this community. This initiative is to help Rockaway residents step out from behind closed doors to live longer and healthier lives."
The event began with a healthy breakfast and health screening, and a warm-up administered by fitness instructor Steve McCartney. Every Saturday until September 13, 2008, Far Rockaway residents will gather together on Beach 59 Street at 8 a.m. to walk. Councilman James Sanders has also challenged everyone to shed pounds, and plans to award the "biggest loser" over the next seven weeks.
The event is sponsored by James Sanders, in collaboration with St. John's Episcopal Hospital, Addabbo Family Health Center, Isotonix and Affinity Health Plan. The closing celebration will take place on Saturday, September 13.
