The Road Less Traveled

Commentary By Erin Baumann

On June 28, the 9th annual Rockaway Relay for Life was held at Riis Park.

This was the first time the event was at Riis Park. The previous eight years the Relay was held at Beach Channel High School.

Rain threatened twice to end this year's Relay. First in the afternoon it poured causing all the luminarias that had been set up to be, unfortunately, ruined. And a second time, delaying the opening ceremonies for about an hour.

Despite those setbacks once the second rain ended the Relay went off without a hitch.

The luminaria bags were redone with the help of my very helpful crew. I want to give a big thank you to all of you. I could not have done it without you guys! Thank you to Kathleen Baumann, Eileen Baumann, Brian Baumann, Michelle Baumann, John Link (Yay Permit!.) Allison Mills, Allison Kahlau, Jennifer Donlon, JeanMarie Hanretty, Ariana King, Mary Smith, Eileen Olstrom, Nicole Moreno, Lew Simon, the Parks Department, and anyone else that lent a helping hand in putting together the ceremony.

Finally, I have to thank the Breezy Point Pipe and Drum Band. Again you guys really helped to make the Luminaria ceremony special. The lap around the track was a perfect end to the ceremony.

Congrats on also being one of the top teams this year with over $6,000 raised. As well as being the best UNO players around.

The top honors for this year's Relay go to the McNally crew with over $9,000 raised.

Great Job Team Braveheart!

To date I believe we have hit this year's goal of $67,000, and hopefully we will surpass it next year.

Thanks as well to Jennifer Diffendale and Fenix Down. You guys rocked!

The Roxbury Barn opened its doors once again late last month. Be sure to check it out. A little bird told me that Whole In One will be playing there very soon.
