The Graybeards kicked off the 24th season of the St. Francis Summer Classic on Monday June 2, and all teams in all divisions are in action now. The lone exception is the Girls High School Division which will be starting on July 28. More ... The New York City Department of Education (DOE) today announced the start of the Big Apple Games, which offer free recreational activities during the summer for children from 8-19 years old. Children can register daily at each site throughout the six-week program. More ... During a little league season where good weather was not always the norm, this championship game was played on a picturesque Friday evening. It featured the two top teams from the Rockaway Little League Minors Division, Freedhand & Freedhand taking on Nicholson's Nine. More ... On Thursday, June 26, the Rockaway Cadets, a team made up of 11 and 12 year old boys from the Rockaways and Broad Channel, won the Kings Bay (Wood Bat League) Major Division Championship. The Cadets defeated the Kings Bay Jeff team in a great come from behind battle that ended in a 5-3 victory. The victory capped a great first half season of baseball for the 16 local boys, who with the championship victory finished with a 16-1 record. More ... The combatants have arrived as a packed house watched the opening tipoff on Monday night at Inwood Terrace Park for the Love, Peace and Unity Basketball Tournament that began last Monday night. On Monday night, Ledburn defeated G- Force, 74-70. Rock Da Fellas came back from an 18-point deficit to defeat Da Dynasty, 56-55. More ... The Breezy Point Biathlon, which has become a staple on each year's community racing calendar, is set to take place on Saturday, July 12th at 10 a.m. The race, which consists of a 1.5 mile run, 3 mile bike, and 0.35 mile run, offers a unique and scenic course that runs through Breezy Point and Roxbury. More ... On July 3, Pat Livingstone had a hole-in-one on the tenth hole in Riis Park. Livingstone was then closest to the pin on that hole and had a chip-inbirdie on hole #4. What a great day for a wonderful gal! Congratulations, Pat! The ladies hope you bet the one horse when you went to the track that same day with your husband!!! More ... It was a pretty good week of fishing with some great action in Jamaica Bay and along the Rockaway beaches. Wendy is now the matriarch of our crew.
