Industrial League Honors Seniors and Youth
The Women's Industrial Service League, Inc. held its annual awards luncheon on June 14, 2008, at Antun's. The gap was bridged between the old and young as senior citizens and high school students were honored for demonstrating outstanding community service.
Four senior citizens received awards: Mrs. Dorothy Brown Jones of St. Luke Cathedral, yhe Reverend Thomas F. Bryant, Jr. of New Bethel Baptist Church, Mother Carrie B. Shell of Macedonia Baptist Church and Mother Sarah R. Taylor of New Gethsemane Christian Fellowship Ministries Soul Saving Station.
Four graduating seniors received awards for being positive role models in areas which include academia, leadership, and extracurricular and community services. The students are Vanessa Henry of Beach Channel High School, Marissa Torre and Erica Trumpet of Lawrence High School and Nanayaa Serwaa of Far Rockaway High School.
The Reverend Duane M. Sleet Sr., Pastor of First Baptist Church in Far Rockaway, gave the keynote address. The Reverend Everett Jenkins and Allyson Elnora Omesiete performed songs of praise. New York City Councilman James Sanders and Dr. Jeremiah C. Gaffney offered motivational and congratulatory remarks to the honorees. Final remarks were presented by Florine Jenkins, president of WISL. The luncheon was chaired by Jacqueline McMikle and co-chaired by Nell C. Terrell.
