Sylvester D. O'Connor

Lifelong Resident

Sylvester D. O'Connor a lifelong resident of Rockaway Beach. Born in 1919 he attended PS 42, Far Rockfro away High School and Cornell University, Class of 1943. Army Veteran World War II, Past Commander of the American Legion Post 272, 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and active alumnus of Cornell University.

After military service he attended McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science and began a long career as manager and co-owner, with his late brother Harry D., of Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home.

Sylvester had a love for flowers, astronomy and geology. He spent much of his life sharing his knowledge with organizations, neighbors and friends. He will be remembered by many for the 50 years he served as organist and choir leader at St. Rose of Lima Church.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harry D. and Vincent R.; sister, Catherine; and sister-in-law, Veronica F.

O'Connor is survived by his nephews, Vincent D., Thomas P., Denis S., and Joseph C.; niece, Patricia K.; nine great-nieces and -nephews; and 19 great-great-nieces and - nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church on July 3, followed by interment at St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, New York.
