Route 878 Reconstruction Planned
The Department of Transportation is planning to ease the congestion along Far Rockaway's main outlet into Nassau County.
The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) has revealed plans to reconstruct a small stretch of the Nassau Expressway, formally known as Route 878. The repair, consisting of a half mile of road, will occur between Burnside Avenue and Rockaway Turnpike.
DOT officials estimate that the project will cost at least $30 million to complete. Repairs will include roadway reconstruction, improved turning lanes, and intersection upgrades. New traffic signals are also expected to be installed along the stretch of roadway. They also plan to improve the water drainage system along with a beautification project including new roadside landscaping views.
The reconstruction project could take nearly three years to complete, starting in 2011, according to state officials.
To show signs of community involvement, DOT also plans to create a web page link that will enable visitors to view plans and post comments and criticisms, said DOT officials.
