Team Wilder Secures Jersey Shore Challenge Title
He remembers the long travel times and the competitive basketball with a smile now. The Rockaway resident knew his team had to play four games in only two days at the Jersey Shore Challenge if they wanted a chance to win the 16 and under division title.
Team Wilder shook off the bus lag as their intense man to man defense and clutch shooting won them the Jersey Shore Challenge at Lakewood High School on June 8.
"This is a team which has no egos and has teamwork. This is the team I wanted to work with. Every kid contributed. It was beautiful," Wilder said. As soon as they arrived, Team Wilder had to play two back-to-back games on Saturday, June 7 to have a chance to compete for the title on Sunday.
They defeated top teams such as the Maryland Elite and the New Jersey Heat, by using a frenetic 1-2-2 defensive press and outstanding performances from key players.
Beach Channel High School freshman Dashawn Hinds had 48 rebounds and 22 blocks in four games. Edgemere resident and Franklin K. Lane High School product Larry Brand was the top scorer with 22 points per game.
With the victory, Team Wilder will advance to the United States Basketball Association Nationals at the College of Charleston in South Carolina from July 23 to the 26.
