Sylvia 'Star' Heyward

Sylvia Heyward, a longtime Rockaway resident, died June 17.

Heyward was born in New York on February 12, 1940. She was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. She was a youth leader and an active member in the Far Rockaway community.

She is survived by her children, Tammy and Elijah Sr.; son-in-law, Anthony; grandsons, Nicholas, Elijah Jr., Ryan and Chase; grandmother, Lelia (Dada); sister, Cynthia; niece, Carita (Vernon); nephews, Dwayne and Christopher; great-nieces, Desiree, Janiece, and Janay; great-nephews, Dwayne Jr., Anthony Jr., Brandon, Chandler, and Kaden; godson, Kevin Coleman; the Walker family, Mason family, Sheldon family and Jenkins family; friends, Eula Jackson and Barbara Walker; home attendant, Ms. Dukes; and many other family members and friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, with visitation at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Disposition was by St. Michael's Crematory in East Elmhurst, New York.
