Cancer Survivors Celebrate
     The annual Cancer Society "Relay for Life," will be held this weekend at the Riis Park Mall. Dozens of teams will join to walk laps to raise funds to fight the disease. The event will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday night, June 28, with a survivor's lap and will continue throughout the evening and into Sunday morning. Those who wish to commemorate a loved one lost to Cancer or to note the survival of somebody may purchase a 'luminaria," a candle to light the way. The luminaria will be lit sometime after dark, event coordinators say.

Historic Ordination At First Congregational Church

'IS 53 Survivors Club' Meets For Lunch At Lawrence
     A group of retired teachers, who once walked the halls of the Brian Piccolo Intermediate School (IS 53) in Far Rockaway, got together last week for their semi-annual "Survivors Club" meeting. Many of the teachers at the luncheon, which was held once again at the Lawrence Country Club on June 17, taught at the school for twenty years or more.      Thomas and Laurie Healy announced the birth of their new baby boy, Thomas Edward Healy, born May 4, 2008 weighing eight pounds three ounces. He is also the first grandchild to Edward and Peggy Walls of Broad Channel and first grandchild to Thomas and Kathy Healy of Rockaway.

Local Resident Stationed In Iraq
     Spc. Joseph Ormsby of Rockaway has been deployed to Iraq. As a member of the National Guard, he is supporting the 3rd battalion 4th Marines in Al-Anbar Province and is stationed at marine base Camp Hit. Ormsby, a Department of Sanitation employee, is a member of the American Legion, Daniel M. O'Connell post #272 and the Knights of Columbus council #2672. He is the husband of Christine and father of William and Lawrence. Anyone is interested in sending care packages to the troops can send them to Spc. Davis Has Been Named Man Of The Year
     The Bayswater Jewish Center names Arnold Davis, Esq., as its 2008 Man of the Year. Davis, a past president of the Center, has been active in many functions of the fifty-plus-year-old Far Rockaway synagogue. He will be honored at the annual weekend gala in the Catskills.

      The University of Scranton conferred 1,561 degrees to members of the largest graduating class in the 120 year history of the Jesuit school. The Best Catch Of All
      Anthony Graciano grew up in Rockaway Park. He learned how to fish from his grandfather, Papa Tom, a World War II veteran, who taught him how to hook bait, and reel in the fish. Graciano later moved to New Jersey, bought his own boat and taught himself where all the best spots were located and the nature of the tide.

Weiner Hosts Town Hall Meeting At PS 114
     Congressman Anthony Weiner came to Rockaway last Sunday, June 22 for a town hall meeting. Weiner addressed such national problems as jobs, the economy and the war in Iraq. Locals addressed their concerns to Weiner, particularly about the overcrowding of local schools such as PS 114, and the cost of gasoline.
