Locals Honored By Friends Honoring Friends
The Friends Honoring Friends Committee, a local civic organization whose mission is to honor those who have had a positive impact in improving the quality of life for residents of the Rockaway community, honored five members of the community on June 7.
The "Phenomenal Woman" honor was bestowed upon former City Councilwoman Juanita Watkins, the first elected representative of the 31st Councilmanic District. Although Councilmember Watkins could not attend, she was able to call in and speak to those assembled to offer her gratitude for the award and to thank everyone for their support and prayers during her illness.
The other honorees, "Extraordinary People Giving Extraordinary Service" included Ernest and Jeanette Brown, Dr. Ed Williams and Isaac Parses.
Ernest and Jeanette Brown, longtime educational and social activist in the Rockaways, received their accolades in front of four generations of the Brown family, who gathered from all across the country to support their legends. The Brown family presented Ernest and Jeanette with a plaque in honor of the occasion. Dr. Ed Williams, President of Rockaway's NAACP and a strong advocate for the community, was joined by state representatives of the NAACP and local branch members who applauded his tireless energy in so many causes. Isaac Parsee, longtime human rights activist and community youth mentor, was joined by members of Local 154 and the youth group, Duces. The youth spoke passionately about Parsee's mentorship and how it has assisted them in becoming better human beings.
