School Meeting To Address Gun Violence Issue
In the wake of the violence that left two teenagers dead and five locals wounded in past weeks, members of the school community will host a public meeting to address that violence at PS/MS 105, 420 Beach 51 Street on Tuesday, June 17 at 7 p.m.
School officials say that the purpose of the meeting is to bring together school administrators, law enforcement officials, educators, parent leaders, elected officials, clergy and community members to discuss the growing problem of guns and gangs.
"We want to come up with a plan for change," one school official said. "We believe that we can work together to find a way to educate and motivate our young people so that they will no longer feel it necessary to settle petty grievances with guns and knives."
The school officials added that she wanted to use this "first-ever public forum on violence," to bring to the table those who have traditionally stood on the sidelines, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
"Everybody who lives in Rockaway is involved in some way with this problem," the official said.
She said that the motto for the schools that called the meeting after some preliminary meetings that included school principals from throughout the peninsula, said it all.
