Where Oh Where Have Our Garbage Cans Gone?

Dear Editor,

Moments before the Memorial Day holiday begins, every year some genius decides that this would be a good time to move almost all the trash receptacles from the boardwalk in Rockaway Park to the beach. NYC doesn't have enough money to put trash cans on the beach AND on the boardwalk during the beach going season? In years past, they at least placed the cans on the beach in line with the exit/entrance ramps and stairs, this way people exiting the beach have a shot at being able to dispose of their garbage on the way off the beach.

Although we dog owners aren't supposed to have our dogs on the beach during the summer months, we at least can only "chance" a ticket making a mad dash for the garbage can which would be 60 feet from the boardwalk (in order to dispose of dog poo). The way things are set up now we would have to walk 500 feet onto the beach in order to find a garbage receptacle. It seems as if NYC has put all its disposable cash into hiring beach "border patrolees" whose main purpose is to give dog owners a hard time at best… and an appearance ticket at worst, while spending NO money on garbage cans and their proper placement.

My guess is that if someone REALLY tries they may actually find an extra dozen or two wire garbage cans stacked in some NYC storage yard, and MAYBE if we're real lucky they might find their way ONTO the boardwalk during the beach season.

I did call 311 to report this situation over a week ago… but… big surprise… nothing was done. As more and more high end real estate is being built and contemplated along our shores, we should do doing MORE not LESS to KEEP THE PLACE CLEAN.

ASH MILLS
