Where Do We Go From Here?

Dear Editor,

This is a defining moment in the history of this country. We have a woman and a man of color fighting for the right to become the leader of the most powerful country in the world. And yet the Black community still suffers from violence, drugs and the lack of programs and resources. We have once again been failed by our leadership and those we have elected to public office. How long will we allow this to continue, how many more of our youth must be victimized by the violence and the circumstances that surround it. The time has come. We must demand change. The community must "Man Up." Many of these young men are our family members; our sons, brothers, uncles, cousins, etc. We must take back our streets. The streets belong to the people. We must call out those officials who smile and say all the right things in front of the camera but do nothing. We must support and elect new blood. The old way of doing business has failed. Watch out for those who try to ride into the election on the coattails of officials who have failed in the Rockaways. You know who you are!

ILYASSHA SHIVERS, SCM
