The Ladies Aid Society of the First Congregational Church of Rockaway Beach enjoyed their yearly spring luncheon on Thursday, June 5, 2008, dining at The Wharf Restaurant in Rockaway Park. The Wharf's great sizzling steak, chicken and shrimp platters were a big hit with the group, as were the other seafood specialties, including scallops, and fish and chips. Beverages were provided courtesy of the president of the Society, Roberta McHugh, and her husband, James.

The Ladies Aid Society was formed in 1888 to assist in raising funds to help pay the mortgage on the church building, and has sustained its activities in support of the church and other charitable organizations continuously for 120 years. The group's annual thrift sales, Christmas Bazaar, and St. Patrick's Tea, which dates back to 1917, have long been enjoyed and supported by the Rockaway community.

First Congregational Church, formed in 1886, was one of the earliest houses of worship in the Rockaways. An Open and Affirming Member of the United Church of Christ, First Congregational is located at 320 Beach 94 Street in Rockaway Beach. For more information about the church, you may contact Pastor Joseph Medlin by calling 718-634-4701, e-mailing to firstcongregational@earthlink.net, or visiting the website www.first-congregational.com. A church spokesperson said, "No matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you're welcome here at First Congregational!"
