Charity Begins At Home At Goldie Maple Academy

Dear Editor,

I am writing to tell you about the wonderful community service projects the students at Goldie Maple Academy (PS 333) are doing. I am a fifth grade teacher in the building and I have had the opportunity to work on the Penny Harvest roundtable committee with a special group of fourth and fifth graders. These students researched and selected four charities and made donations to each through the Common Cents program. Now we are having a fundraiser to collect amenities, like travel-sized shampoos, conditioners, and soaps to make care packages for Volunteers of America. These care packages will be given to needy NYC families as a welcome package when they enter one of the organization's many family shelters and safe houses. In addition, the entire school is making greeting cards for God's Love We Deliver, a non-profit organization that delivers meals to people in Queens who are unable to leave their homes. These greeting cards will be delivered with the food that God's Love delivers daily.

With all the sad stories that I read about in newspapers, I wanted to pass on the good works that are coming out of Far Rockaway's youth.
