The Future Of Beach 116 Street

Dear Editor,

Will the history of Beach 116 Street repeat itself when the developers of these high-risers with stores and shopping arcades beneath them come to pass? Those of us who have lived a lifetime in Rockaway know how we had great stores on Beach 116 Street and the shopping village in Far Rockaway. They were needed then but along came Kings Plaza with a bus from Beach 116 Street to the mall, and the Queens Center with a bus that went to it and all the shops in the Five Towns area. Our stores began to close one by one as residents hopped the buses to the malls. We had Sun and Surf, Sylvia, Carolee, Whitty's Men's Store, and Belle and Beau to name a few. Also, not to mention the many people that shop online now.

Do we want to impact our community with stores and condos that may never be rented?

Arverne By The Sea will be the center of the peninsula with its planned station housing shops attracting people to that area. Let that be a model, if it works fine, and then follow. But do not give the city an "okay" until it does.

K. "BOBBIE" HART
