A Hammels woman sitting in her car at 2 a.m. on May 29 was shot once in the shoulder by a gunman, who then fled the scene, police officials say. Jacqueline Benjamin told responding officers that she was sitting in her 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe, waiting for a parking spot to open up, when she heard five or six gunshots and immediately felt a pain in her right shoulder. Ten people were taken to local hospitals after an MTA bus driver swerved to avoid hitting a child and crashed into a fence in Edgemere on Sunday evening. Sources say that the youngster darted in front of the bus at Beach 44 Street and Beach Channel Drive at about 7:30 p.m. An MTA spokesperson told The Wave that the drive veered away from the boy, who had stepped off the curb in the middle of the block. John Barkaus, a 16-month Rockaway resident, died May 30. Barkaus was born in Astoria. He was a retired executive vice president with the MTA and a US Postal Service letter carrier. He is survived by his mother, Mildred Barkaus; children, Sharon Daly, John and Keith Barkaus; sisters, Nancy and Kathleen Woods; and grandchildren, Kerin, Connal Patrick, Patrick and Liam. More...
